Oral Proficiency Interview

Interpreting OPI Results

How are examinees rated?

  • Candidates are given a holistic rating based on all of the following factors:
    1. Vocabulary
      Grammar
      Pronunciation
      Fluency
      Linguistic tasks
      Socio-linguistic/cultural awareness
  • Candidates are rated on an 11-point scale, ranging from "0," no functional proficiency, to "5," educated native-speaker proficiency.

What are plus levels?

  • Plus levels (0+, 1+, 2+, 3+, 4+)
    1. Demonstration of inconsistent proficiency at the next higher base level
For example, a 1+ speaker can do the same things with the language a 2 speaker can, but he/she will not do them as well.
