Our History

Since 1954, the Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC) has played a vital role in supporting the strategic policies and global objectives of the United States Government and the Department of War (DoW). Originally established as the United States Air Force Language School, the institution’s initial mission was dedicated to teaching the English language to Allied pilot candidates.

As the technical requirements of international military students evolved, so did the schoolhouse. In July 1966, concurrent with the activation of the 3746th Pre-Flight Training Squadron, the facility was reorganized as the Defense Language Institute English Language School (later designated as a “Center”). During this transformative year, the center expanded its curriculum far beyond pilot preparation to provide specialized language training across a wide array of technical career fields. This growth was further cemented in 1976 when the United States Air Force officially assumed Executive Agent responsibility for the schoolhouse.

A defining milestone in the Center’s history occurred in 1993 with the formal inauguration of a permanent, 16-acre resident campus at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.

Today, DLIELC continues to adapt to the evolving needs of the DoW by offering a highly immersive and comprehensive learning environment. The modern JBSA-Lackland campus features state-of-the-art academic facilities, a well-equipped library, a dedicated dining hall, streamlined student administration buildings, and comfortable housing for both officer and enlisted personnel.

By utilizing small, technology-enhanced classrooms, DLIELC fosters a student-centered learning experience. The Center’s robust and adaptable curriculum ensures that every course aligns directly with the specific, highly technical language requirements which support Security Cooperation priorities.
